Fire in Sharjah kills 5 injures 44

Five people died and 44 others were injured after a fire broke out at a high-rise residential building in Al Nahda.

The police believe that the deaths were caused by suffocation. Out of the 44 injured, 17 are still receiving treatment in the hospital, while 27 were discharged after completing treatment.

Emergency response teams arrived at the site immediately after receiving a report of the incident at 10:50 pm and were able to put out the fire in record time, according to Maj-Gen Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police.

Residents were quickly evacuated from the building and moved to temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire is believed to be some embers that came in contact with waste stuck in a hallway, causing the flames to quickly rise up the 39-storey tower with 750 apartments, as per the initial investigations by the police.

The police have urged everyone, from property owners to tenants, to take all precautionary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
