More that 70 people were reported to have died when a wildfire ripped through the village of Mati on the Attica coastline of Greece and trapped many residents in their home and cars.
Some desparate families that tried to reach the village’s harbour and beach found their passages blocked by walls of smoke and flame but coastal patrol boats were able to rescue residents who managed to reach the water’s edge.
The summer heatwave has caused many wildfires in countries across central and southern Europe that have experienced emergency teams to battle the blazes.
However the Swedish government issued an appeal for international help after 44 fires broke out in woodlands in the north of the country and spread to areas in Lapland that are defined as part of the Arctic Circle.
