Vehicle safety campaign announced

A major awareness campaign is calling on school bus operators to prevent fire accidents by installing smoke detectors inside vehicles. The campaign – launched by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, is also asking for adherence to other safety requirements in schools in order to protect students.

Major General  Dr Jassim Muhammad Al Marzouqi, Commander-in-Chief of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior said: “It is also necessary to install smoke detectors in the vehicles and to educate students on how to use fire extinguishers so as to promote safety and protect lives and property,”

The standard specification for safety requirements in school buses was approved last year by the UAE Cabinet and obliges vehicles to have fire extinguishers installed and to develop selfextinguishing technology to prevent the spread of fire. Fuel tanks  must also be fitted with a safety system and be protected by a metal cover.
