PyroPhobic Systems selected by General Motors

PyroPhobic Systems Ltd has been selected for application in General Motors’ Ultium battery platform for its electric vehicles.

PyroPhobic Systems Ltd is a leader in fire-resistant thermoplastic resins and components which are used in the battery and construction safety markets. The company’s LithiumPrevent 200 material is what has been selected for General Motors’ use.

John Page, President and CEO of PyroPhobic Systems, said: “PyroPhobic Systems is honoured to provide LithiumPrevent 200 to General Motors as a Canadian innovation that meets the needs of their demanding application for safety.

“The recognition by General Motors and their decision to choose our technology demonstrates the value they place on safety and innovation.”

The LithiumPrevent 200 material has unique intumescent properties that allows it to expand to create a barrier, therefore reducing the propagation of fire. It also mitigates thermal runaway events, helping to ensure motorists have a safer drive.

Personnel from the two companies spent two years collaborating to rigorously test the material and certify it for safety and compliance.

The new partnership will see LithiumPrevent 200 replace traditional glass-filled plastic battery components.
