06 Aug Olympic velodrome in flames
The velodrome built in Rio de Janeiro to stage the cycling events at the 2016 Olympic Games has been extensively damaged by fire.
The blaze was caused by a flying lantern that fell on the building which was constructed using a special pine wood imported from Siberia.
The practice of making and flying small hot air balloons is common in Brazil during the hot dry months of June and July.
In the past they have hampered aircraft and started forest fires and the velodrome fire is expected to strengthen a campaign to criminalise the activity.
