Istanbul prison fire left 20 inmates and prison guard hospitalised

A fire in an Istanbul prison broke out on Friday 4th February leaving 20 inmates and one prison warden in hospital. The 21 people in hospital are currently receiving treatment for smoke inhalation.

The blaze began in Ümraniye prison, but no cause has been confirmed by investigations yet. Several firetrucks attended the scene, but were able to bring the flames under control.

Turkey’s justice minister Bekir Bozdağ confirmed on Twitter that the fire had been extinguished, and that nobody involved was thought to be in a serious condition.
