Firefighter loses life in Dubai blaze

An Emirati firefighter has died in a Dubai blaze, and his family have paid their respects and expressed their pride in knowing that their loved one died in the line of duty.

Sgt Omar Khalifa Al Ketbi, from Dubai Civil Defence, died responding to a fire in Al Aweer that broke out last Friday. Sgt Al Ketbi was 29 years old.

After the blaze was detected, fire crews from Al Mizhar, Rashidiya and Nad Al Shiba fire stations were summoned to Al Kabayel Discount Centre at 12.32pm. Teams were helping to get people to safety and to extinguish the fire.

Unfortunately, during the cooling-down process, a section of the building’s roof collapsed, killing Sgt Al Ketbi.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, took to Twitter for a tribute to the fallen firefighter, writing:

“Our firefighters sacrifice their lives to save others and to protect our nation. Dubai will remember Sergeant Omar Khalifa Al Ketbi, who passed away while on duty responding to a fire in Al Aweer.”
