10 Sep Ferry burns in the Phillipines
Fishing boats and passing ships, were alerted by coastguards who had no patrols nearby, rescued 245 people from a burning ferry in southern Philippine waters, but a one-year-old girl and two other people died.
The fire had started in the ferry’s engine room soon after it left Santander en route for Zamboanga and spread quickly throughout the vessel which was reported to have been completely gutted along with the 83 vehicles it was carrying.
