Devastating ferry fire

At least 23 passengers were killed and 17 more were missing after a ferry caught fire just 15 minutes after setting sail from the Maura Angke port in Jakarta, in Indonesia.

The Zahro Express ferry was carrying more than 230 people to New Year celebrations at Tidung island, a resort some 50km from the capital.

The fire was reported to have started in the ferry’s engine and quickly spread to an area was fuel was stored.

Many passengers jumped into the sea to escape the flames and around 190 were rescued by other boats which rushed to their aid from the port.
