04 Nov College blaze
The extent of the damage caused by a fire which destroyed part of the main building at Gower College in the Welsh city of Swansea could have been reduced had local fire hydrants been position better.
About 100 firefighter tackled the blaze which started in the library on the third floor of the building and quickly spread to the fourth while lower floors were damaged by the water that was used to put out the flames.
However, Iwan Cray, area manager for Mid and West Wales Fire Service, said : “The water supply was not sufficient for us to be able to put all of our operational approach into place. We had to work around that and bring water in from strategic hydrants which were further away.”
