Ancient temple engulfed by flames

Ancient sculptures in the famous Meenakshi Temple in the Indian city of Madurai escaped serious damage despite being engulfed by flames and smoke during a fire.

The night time blaze which took 60 firefighters five hours to control gutted a row of 30 shops housed in the temple but they were all closed at the time and there were no reported injuries.

Many of the sculptures and the temple’s 1,000-pillar Mandapam Hall were left covered in soot but officials were confident they would be able to reopen the temple to the public within a matter of days.
