Brigadier Sami AL Naqbi, the director – general of Sharjah Civil Deference, has launched a new programme of safety inspections for scrap businesses operating in the Emirate’s business area.
He said a zero-tolerance approach would be implemented during the crackdown on violators who ignore safety procedures.
The move followed a fierce fire which reports said completely gutted a scrap yard packed with automobile spare parts all of which were destroyed.
Firefighters from Muwailih and Saman quickly doused the fire before it could spread to other nearby commercial sites but the area was for several hours covered by a pall of thick black smoke.
Sharjah also suffered a second fierce blaze which broke out inside a factory in Industrial Zone 13 which was manufacturing wooden articles but Sharjah Civil Defence teams quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished it inside three hours.
