A 5,000 tally

The open platform company in IP video management software (VMS), Milestone Systems, has a long standing partnership with Bosch Security Systems in both the Camera Partner Program (CaPP) and as a Milestone Solution Partner (MSP). Milestone VMS supports dedicated interoperability with the full line of Bosch cameras, including integration with their video analytics, access control and now the AVIOTEC fire & smoke detection solution. The Bosch AVIOTEC camera will be number 5,000 for Milestone’s tally of wide support for third-party devices operating with XProtect VMS, when the Milestone Device Pack 8.4 was released February 25.

The award for ‘Milestone Supported Device Number 5,000’ was announced and handed over to Brad Eck, Bosch Integration Manager North America, and Brian Wiser, President of Bosch Sales North America, at the Milestone Integration Platform Symposium (MIPS) – the annual Americas partner conference for the leading VMS provider. The event was held in Scottsdale, Arizona, with 500 security professionals participating.

Building on Bosch’s Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA), video-based fire detection can complement state-of-the-art fire detection technologies and enable early detection of smoke and flames with very low false alarm rates – especially in challenging environments where conventional detectors cannot offer satisfactory reaction times. Main applications include buildings with high ceilings or dusty and humid areas. AVIOTEC can also secure environments where no other reliable fire detection solutions exist, for example, saw mills or paper factories, hangars or extremely large monitoring areas.

Detect fire faster – at the source
Using intelligent algorithms in video surveillance, AVIOTEC can identify smoke and flames as soon as they come into the range of the camera rather than waiting for smoke to migrate to smoke detectors that are often installed on the ceilings of a building. By detecting fires at the source rather than the ceiling, cameras can issue an alarm within seconds compared to point detectors that can take critical minutes to detect an alarm condition. AVIOTEC is based on intelligent algorithms to distinguish between real fires and disturbance values like reflections, movements or backlights. This guarantees more reliable detection with almost no false alarms.
The AVIOTEC video-based fire detection system scales well from a single camera to a networked system of distributed cameras with a central console and video management system such as Milestone XProtect. Using Bosch’s Dynamic Transcoding technology, AVIOTEC can relay alarms to an existing fire alarm panel or transmit them via Ethernet to a monitoring center or to a mobile device like an iPad, thanks to the low bandwidth requirements. Receiving HD-quality video images in real time gives firefighters a good understanding of the current situation even before they arrive on the scene.

Combining safety and security
These new cameras are easy to install and require very little maintenance in contrast to smoke and flame detectors. The use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) can eliminate the need for individual power supplies and power cables, making AVIOTEC even more cost efficient. AVIOTEC can also be used for very small and distributed facilities such as power stations and signal boxes where the installation of fire panels would be too costly.
