29 dead in Istanbul fire

A fire claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals in a 16-story residential building in Istanbul on Tuesday, as stated by the governor of Turkey’s economic hub.

This updated toll contrasts with earlier reports of 15 fatalities and eight injuries.

The office of Governor Davut Gul announced, “The toll from the fire in Gayrettepe of Besiktas district has risen to 29,” referring to the affected neighbourhood in Istanbul.

“One individual injured in the fire remains under hospital care,” it further stated.

The fire ignited at 12:47  and was finally brought under control by firefighters after several hours, according to the governor’s office.

Throughout the afternoon, the count of casualties surged in successive updates from the governor’s office, reflecting the grim reality as more victims succumbed to their injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that the blaze originated during construction work on the first and second underground floors, where a nightclub was situated, Governor Gul informed reporters.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced: “An inquiry has been launched into the fire in Gayrettepe.”

According to reports from NTV, five individuals have been apprehended at the scene in connection to the fire.
