1 dead as a fire broke out on a supertanker

A fire has broken out on a supertanker carrying 2 million barrels of oil in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka. 22 of the crew have been rescued however one crew member died in the fire.

A spokesman has said there was no damage to the cargo. The fire in the engine room of New Diamond, was caused by an explosion, according to Sri Lanka Navy spokesman Indika de Silva. It later spread to other parts of the vessel. A crack of about 2 meters was seen 10 meters above the waterline in the rear of the tanker’s port side,

Authorities are taking action to try and reduce the risk of possible oil spills in the future.
